Saudi Arabia is set to revolutionize global air travel by announcing the world’s largest airport. Located in Riyadh, King Salman International Airport is scheduled to open by 20230. The layout showcases six grand parallel runways. It will be extravagantly massive, with a holding capacity of 120 million passengers per year, the largest in the world.
According to a UK media report, the construction company Mace Group has won the bid to carry out the delivery process of this airport. The firm has diligently undertaken tasks ranging from project and design management to cost consulting and procurement advice.
What makes it unique?
With a budget of over 23 billion pounds, the largest airport in the world will cover 57 square kilometers. Around 12 kilometers will be dedicated to retail outlets, providing the best entertainment experiences for passengers. The vision is to expand the passenger intake to 185 million per year by 2050. The project is an important milestone to be achieved under Saudi Vision 2030. This Vision plan is an initiative to transform the country into a global tourism hub. This masterplan was introduced in November 2022 and has been brought on paper recently. It will have both residential and recreational facilities. It is expected to be completed before the World Expo 2030 begins and will greet passengers for this world-class event. The country is also prepping for FIFA World Cup 2034 after organizing its very own Saudi Pro League.
Besides this, the new airport is expected to significantly boost the Saudi economy by creating thousands of jobs and attracting international investments. It is set to provide 1.5 lakh job opportunities to people.
In line with Saudi Arabia’s commitment to sustainability, the airport will be equipped with eco-friendly technologies, including solar power and energy-efficient systems, making it one of the greenest airports in the world.
As the largest airport in the world, King Salman International is set to reshape global aviation. Its opening will not only elevate Saudi Arabia’s position in the international travel market but also enhance connectivity between continents, driving economic growth and fostering cultural exchange.
The fun fact is the world’s largest airport, King Fahd International Airport (DMM), is also situated in Saudi Arabia. It welcomes about 10 million passengers every year.
